Treatment Plan
Heart valve disease, once diagnosed, is a lifelong condition. It is important to have ongoing medical care and see your doctor regularly. Call your doctor immediately if your symptoms worsen.
The goals of valve disease treatment are:
- Prevent or relieve symptoms in situations where the valve disease is mild
- Protect your heart from further damage.
- Repair or replace faulty valves when they cause severe symptoms or become life threatening.
Treatment plans involve a team of physicians including cardiologists and surgeons and depends on:
- Your age, overall health, and medical history
- Extent of the valve disease
- Which valve is the problem
- Your signs and symptoms
- Your tolerance for specific medications, procedures, or therapies
Treatment may include periodic surveillance without medicines, medical therapies designed to manage symptoms or surgery. You and your Valve Clinic physician will determine which approach is best for you.
Medication
In some cases, medication may be all that is required to manage your valve disease. This might include medication that reduces symptoms by controlling the heart rate or rhythm, or relieving the strain on the heart muscle.
Surgery
Surgery may be necessary to repair or replace the malfunctioning valve(s). Surgery may include valve repair or replacement.
